BRIDGEPORT — Cars change, but dogs always stay the same.

A scratch behind the ear is bliss. A tossed tennis ball is a treat.

I have an understanding with Trooper, the 5-year-old German Shepherd that lives at Emil's Body Shop: If he spots me walking down the sidewalk, finds his soggy tennis ball and drops it at my feet, I'll throw it down the alley for a quick chase. Or launch it into the sky for an easy pop-up fly.

On a recent summer afternoon, Trooper trotted into my camera's frame and waited for me to hold up my end of the deal.

Click.

A single snapshot transported Trooper back in time to 1963, when the Chevy Impala's curves were a common sight on the South Side.

Some say cars aren't as beautiful as they used to be. You can't say the same of dogs.
