BRIDGEPORT — The neighborhood has a new art show featuring artwork by graduates of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign’s School of Art and Design.

The Elephant Room Gallery — at 2727 S Mary St. in C.C.'s Art Garage — is now hosting “Back to Our Foundations,” showcasing a wide range of painting, drawing, sculpture and installation work.

The mission statement behind the Foundations show stems from the artists' experience practicing their crafts at the University of Illinois:

“Life is chaotic, unpredictable and hard to explain. Sometimes, you get so lucky to be surrounded by a group of people who help to puzzle over this messy world, and make you feel like you’re not alone."

The work explores a variety of themes, including poverty and homelessness, celebrity culture and beauty, calling on the viewer to “spend time contemplating and questioning the world around them.”

Featured artists include Seana Higgins, Charity White, Jenna Kerndl, Clara Hoag, Laura Collins, Amanda Paulson, Lauren Macklin, Jennifer Cronin, Amanda Kowalski, Robbie Vermillion, Vivian Zapata, Carmen Egolf, Jordan McGirk, Jonathan Pacheco, Lauren Brescia and Kelly Enskat.

The exhibit will be on display from 5:30-8 p.m. Friday and Aug. 19. The show’s last day is Aug. 20, welcoming guests from 2-5 p.m.
