NEAR WEST SIDE — A 13-year-old boy and a 21-year-old man suffered minor injuries in a drive-by shooting on the Near West Side late Monday afternoon, police said.

At 5:27 p.m., the two were walking in the 100 block of North Wood Street when someone shot at them from a dark-colored car, according to Officer Bari Lemmon, a Chicago Police spokeswoman.

The boy was brought to Stroger Hospital with a gunshot wound in the right hand, Lemmon said. Police could not provide his condition but said he was "stable."

The man refused medical attention for a graze wound in his head, Lemmon said.

The shooting occurred in the Maypole Avenue block of the Westhaven Park apartment complex, a few blocks from the United Center.

Teresa Easol, who lives on the block, said her young nephew was playing outside when "at least 20" shots rang out, bringing on chaos.

"I couldn't even tell what was happening — everyone was just running around trying to get out of the way," Easol said. "It was terrifying."

She added that shootings were relatively rare in the complex, calling the incident "very surprising."

No one is in custody, police said.
