DOWNTOWN — Former Gov. Pat Quinn held a super serious news conference on Wednesday — but the star of the show was the ironing board he used as a podium.

Quinn was at City Hall to push for two petitions that could lead to referendums asking Chicagoans if they'd like to implement mayoral term limits and create a "consumer advocate."

A spokesman, William Morgan, said the ironing board was just a "quick and easy" platform they could use. You can spread clipboards along them, he noted, making it easy for multiple people to sign the petitions at once.

But, pressed for a little more, Morgan offered up another idea: Perhaps the ironing board was symbolic? Quinn's dealing with "pressing issues," Morgan said.

That wasn't enough, though. Grinning, Morgan asked, "Aren't you steamed about property taxes?"

Groan.

Quinn is known for his, um, thrifty ways. For example: When Gov. Rod Blagojevich was impeached and thrown out of office, then-Lt. Gov. Pat Quinn simply crossed out the "Lt." from his own business cards to show that he was the state's new governor.
