CHICAGO — A 6-year-old girl who was shot and wounded in Logan Square has returned home from the hospital, officials said.

On June 6, Jaylene Bermeo was outside at a family party in the 2100 block of North Bingham Street when she was shot during a drive-by shooting, police said. Jaylene was hit in the back and was hospitalized in critical condition. Her lung was punctured and a bullet was lodged close to her heart.

Jaylene was released from the hospital a week later but then had to go back. She was released again on Wednesday evening and is "home with her family and doing well," spokeswoman Alexandra Normington said in an emailed statement.

Authorities have said Jaylene was an unintended target caught in a Logan Square gang war. A 17-year-old has been charged in connection to the shooting.

The home Jaylene was playing outside will be sold and its residents are permanently banned from the property.
