Downtown Bandit Pretends To Shop At Stores, Grabs Cash Instead

DOWNTOWN — Police are alerting Downtown retailers about a man pretending to shop at stores, only to swipe the cash drawer once a clerk opens the register. 

In the crimes, the suspect approached the store counters with items to buy and then "forcefully removed the cash drawer" once a clerk opened the register.  In one instance, the suspect grabbed a clerk's arm and pushed the clerk away.

The robberies were reported at:

•3:30 p.m. May 16 in the 700 block of South State Street.

•8:50 a.m. June 6 in the 100 block of North Wabash Avenue.

•6 p.m. June 8 in the 500 block of South State Street.

Police did not disclose how much cash was stolen. The suspect is described as a 6-foot-2 to 6-foot-4 black man aged between 30 and 40 years old wearing a black baseball hat with a Chicago Bulls logo.
