LINCOLN SQUARE — There aren't as many traditions surrounding the summer solstice as, say, Christmas or National Doughnut Day, so sure, let's all play the harmonica to pass the time on the longest day of the year.
A "harmonica blowout" is just one of the performances set to take place Tuesday in Welles Park as part of a citywide solstice celebration — the free Make Music Chicago festival.
The fun gets started at 1:30 p.m. with the harmonica jamboree and continues throughout the afternoon and into evening at the park's gazebo, 2333 W. Sunnyside Ave.
Amateurs and professionals, adults and children are all invited to play along or simply soak up the tunes.
• Harmonica Blowout with Skip Landt, 1:30-2:30 p.m.
• Great American songbook sing- and play-along, 2:30-3:15 p.m.
• The Meadowridge Ramblers (blues, folk), 3:15-3:45 p.m.
• Annie Mac and Barb Smith (jazz, blues), 3:45-4:15 p.m.
• Kid Knish (singer/songwriter, folk, world), 4:15-4:45 p.m.
• Tony Scarimbolo and members of the Barndance Company (folk, country, bluegrass, Americana), 4:45-5:45 p.m.
• Chicago Philharmonic Brass, 6:30-8:30 p.m.
Winnemac Park, 5101 N. Leavitt St., is also taking part in the festival. Bring the kids to the Merry Music Makers Sing-along, 10-11 a.m. Come back in the evening for a fiddle tunes jam, 6-8 p.m.
The Old Town School of Folk Music, 4544 N. Lincoln Ave., will host a performance by the brass trio V3NTO, 3:45-4:15 p.m.
In nearby Ravenswood Manor, the Narloch Piano Studio, 4636 N. Francisco Ave., is holding a marathon interactive performance and reading of music/writing by composers Erik Satie, John Cage and Morton Feldman. Swing by between noon and 8 p.m.
