CHICAGO — A 16-year-old boy was shot and critically wounded Wednesday night while trying to fight off a robber in South Shore, police said.

At 9:50 p.m., the teen was standing in a gangway in the 6900 block of South Dante Avenue when a man walked up and said he was robbing him, said Officer Jose Estrada, a Chicago Police spokesman. The teen got into a fight with the man, and during the struggle the man fired his gun "numerous" times, Estrada said.

The teen was shot in the back and left arm. He was taken to Northwestern Hospital in critical condition, Estrada said.

A person of interest was being questioned in the shooting.
