Corey Ray Could Join Kris Bryant, Robin Ventura As Golden Spikes Winner

CHICAGO — Former Simeon and Chicago White Sox Amateur City Elite (ACE) star Corey Ray is one of the four finalists for the Golden Spikes Award, given to the top amateur baseball player in the United States.

The award will be presented at 6 p.m. June 30 on ESPN's SportsCenter.

Now at Louisville, Ray was named to the All-ACC first team for the second straight season in 2016, with a .310 batting average, 15 home runs and 60 RBIs. Ray last week was selected fifth overall by the Milwaukee Brewers in the Major League Baseball draft. The junior finished second in the nation in stolen bases with 44 and started all 62 games for Louisville.

The other finalists are Seth Beer (Clemson), Kyle Lewis (Mercer) and Logan Shore (Florida).

Past winners of this prestigious award include current Major League Baseball players such as Kris Bryant (’13), Mike Zunino (’12), Trevor Bauer (’11), Bryce Harper (’10), Stephen Strasburg ('09), Buster Posey ('08), David Price (’07), Tim Lincecum (’06), Alex Gordon (’05), Jered Weaver (’04), Rickie Weeks (’03) and Mark Kotsay (’95). Former Major League stars that have captured the award include Pat Burrell (’98), Robin Ventura (’88), Jim Abbott (’87), Will Clark (’85), Dave Magadan (’83), Terry Francona (’80) and Tim Wallach (’79).
