Wicker Park's Plant Sale This Weekend: Everything You Need to Know

 Wicker Park Garden Club first broke ground on a small garden along Damen Avenue in 1987.  Today, the 10,000 square feet of gardens feature numerous perennials including 150 roses of all colors and styles such as hybrid tea, grandiflora, floribunda, English roses, moss roses and many historic varieties, according to Doug Wood.

WICKER PARK —  This weekend's annual Wicker Park Garden Club Plant Sale will offer vegetables, herbs, flowering annuals, hanging baskets and a special "Plant and Grow" area for kids.

Proceeds from the sale, presented in partnership with the Chicago Park District, will go to the maintenance of volunteer-tended park gardens as well as the club's lecture series.

Sale hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, 1425 N. Damen Ave. If it rains, the sale will move inside the fieldhouse gym.

According to a news release, the sale will include "plants that perform well in Chicago" and each plant is personally hand-picked by the Wicker Park Garden Club members. David's Tea will be handing out samples for the first three hours of the sale each day.

Any volunteer who signs up online to work a three-hour shift will get a discount on their plant purchases.

The plant sale activity lineup:

10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday and Sunday: Seed Starting for Kids - Decorate Pots for Mother's Day and then fill with soil and seeds.

10:30 to 11:15 a.m. Saturday and Sunday:  Goldfish Swim School Demonstrations

11:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Saturday:  Maggie McKay's Nutrition Talk, "Spice Things Up This Summer: Learn the health benefits & uses of different herbs and spices"

11:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Sunday:  Maggie McKay's Nutrition Talk, "Play with Your Food! : Who Knew Eating Vegetables Could be So Much fun?"
