CHICAGO — A South Austin man stole a car with a 1-year-old girl inside, then dropped off the baby before a police chase, police said.

Ardell Walker, 26, of the 5200 block of West Van Buren, has been charged with hijacking a car, kidnapping, child endangerment and 13 moving violations, according to a Chicago Police news release.

On Tuesday afternoon, Walker stole the car with the baby inside in the 5800 block of West Roosevelt Road, police said. He drove off but later stopped the car and took out the baby, who was in her car seat, and left her in the 900 block of South Menard, police said.

Walker got back into the car and drove off, police said. Officers spotted him and began to follow the car, but Walker crashed it, got out and ran away. Police caught him after a chase.

Walker will appear in court on Friday.

The baby girl was unharmed and was brought back to her mother, police said. A 10-year-old girl who had also been in the car was able to get out before Walker drove away, police said.
