CHICAGO — After five years of having to compete with the boys, the all-girls drill team at Hubbard High School took first place at a recent competition.

The lady cadets at Hubbard, 6200 S. Hamlin Ave., took first place overall at the Waukegan High School drill meet last month, according to the team's coach, John Wargo.

The team also won three first-place team awards on its way to securing the overall top spot. In the individual events, the Hubbard woman's team earned six of the 10 available medals, Wargo said.

A lack of interested girls meant that Hubbard fielded a team of boys and girls for the previous five years. But this year marked the first time in that span that the school has had enough interest to field an all-girls team, Wargo said.

Tayde Medina took first place in the unarmed basic drill competition and Joseline Diaz took first place in the armed basic competition, Wargo said.

Hubbard competed in the Waukegan invitational against some top-tier junior ROTC programs, including Carver Military Academy in West Pullman and Auburn High School of Rockford, Wargo said.

Wargo, the team's coach and a retired U.S. Army lieutenant, said the women displayed a great amount of determination in not only fielding a team, but coming in first place.

"It was a demonstration of what determination, hard work and team spirit can accomplish," Wargo said in a statement.
