CHICAGO — Five people in a Lincoln Square nursing home were hospitalized on Saturday, fire officials said.

At 3:40 p.m., the Fire Department received a call of a sick person at a nursing home in the 5300 block of North Western Avenue and took the person to a hospital, said Cmdr. Frank Velez, a Chicago Fire spokesman. The nursing home then called back, saying other people were sick, and four people were taken to area hospitals.

Continental Care Center, 5336 N. Western Ave., said on Sunday it had no comment about the incident.

Three people were taken to Swedish Covenant Hospital and two were taken to Presence St. Francis Hospital, all in "stable" condition, Velez said.

The department did a "top-to-bottom" check for carbon monoxide levels, but the results were negative, he said.

The Illinois Department of Public Health is investigating why the people fell ill, Velez said. The IDPH could not be reached for comment Sunday.
