NORWOOD PARK — Dennis Tufano, the original lead singer of 1960s pop group the Buckinghams, will perform at Taft High School to benefit the school’s arts and music programs March 12.

Tufano, who grew up in Logan Square, will perform all of the group's hits, including "Kind of a Drag," which was the No. 1 song for two weeks in February 1967. The group, made up of Chicago musicians, had three songs hit the Billboard Top Ten that year.

The concert will take place at 7:30 p.m. March 12 at the school, 6530 W. Bryn Mawr Ave. Tickets range from $30-$50, organizers said.

The Buckinghams broke up in 1970, and Tufano went on to perform as a solo musician and toured with Olivia Newton-John. He also worked as an actor.

Tufano will be backed by the Chicago Experience band. He will be joined on stage by musician Dave Rice and vocalist Donna Rice. Comedian Vince Maranto will open the show.

Tufano will also perform songs by Bobby Darin, and pay homage to Taft's history as the inspiration for "Grease" and the alma mater of Terry Kath, the leader of the band Chicago, whose virtuoso guitar skills anchored a long list of Top 40 hits.

Tickets to the concert are available online or by phone at 800-838-3006.
