CHICAGO — Southwest Side schools have seen their budgets slashed by more than $2.25 million in the latest round of cuts to Chicago Public Schools.

Kennedy High School (losing $201,824) saw the largest cut, followed by Catalyst Maria Charter School (losing $148,368). While Blair (gaining $7,609) and Carson (gaining $24,356) elementary schools were given more funding, 33 schools in the area had their budgets cut.

In all, Southwest Side schools had $2,278,628 cut from their budgets. There was $85 million in cuts district-wide.

The cuts were necessary to keep "our schools' doors open for our students," said CPS CEO Forrest Claypool at a Feb. 8 forum. The district had planned on receiving $480 million in state funding, but that money has not come through and CPS is trying to make up the budget shortfall.
