ENGLEWOOD — The Englewood community is invited to a free art and fashion show with the theme "Black Lives Matter" on Feb. 27.

Englewood resident Samaiyah Muhammad, founder of Creativity in Motion, wanted to bring her love of art to the community's young people. She has been hosting free art workshops at the Kelly Library, 6151 S. Normal Blvd., since June.

"I wanted to hear the voice of the youth and see how they respond to what’s going on," Muhammad said. The Black Lives Matter workshops have been held every Saturday since Jan. 9 for young people to discuss how the treatment of African-Americans across the country affects them. This upcoming event gives them a chance to "express themselves" through art, Muhammad said.

Participants will show off bracelets and T-shirts they made. There will be a vision life board, photo collage and a special edition of "Jeopardy!" to brush up on black history. There will be prizes, music and desserts, too. The event is from noon-4:30 p.m.

"It’s going to be an experience," Muhammad said, not wanting to reveal too much.

She will also play a short video she made that will show community members talking about how they feel about racial injustice suffered by African-Americans. They were asked what they can do to change it.

"My main focus is just to give the kids recognition and let them be the star," Muhammad said.

The Black Lives Matter workshop will continue to meet every Saturday from 2:30-4:30 p.m. before the Feb. 27 event.
