ASHBURN — Metra Police arrested two 16-year-old boys who were observed breaking into parked cars outside an Ashburn Metra station Tuesday afternoon, according to a Wednesday announcement.
Around 4:10 p.m. Tuesday, a nearby witness told Metra Police the teens were circling cars and checking door handles for access, according to a news release. Police surrounded the teens and arrested them, recovering property they'd taken from one of the cars.
The burglars are set to appear in Cook County Juvenile Court in February, when they'll each face one count of burglary to a motor vehicle, according to the release.
Police credited the arrests to a recent increase in patrols around Metra stations provoked by similar incidents last year, according to Metra spokeswoman Meg Reile.
But most important to catching would-be burglars, Reile said, is attentive bystanders who live by the mantra of "If you see something, say something."
"We're out there with increased patrols, but just like any police force, we don't have the ability to be everywhere all the time," Reile said. "That's why, if a community member sees someone wandering around the lot in the middle of the day, it never hurts to call."
Anyone who witnesses incidents like these is encouraged to call Metra Police at 312-322-2800.
