COOK COUNTY CRIMINAL COURTHOUSE — The man who prosecutors say followed a woman off the Red Line in Rogers Park Saturday before allegedly robbing and raping her was held without bail Wednesday.

Milton Anderson, 26, turned himself into the area's alderman after security camera footage identified him as the man who followed the 25-year-old woman off the Jarvis "L" stop at 4:40 a.m. Saturday.

According to prosecutors, Anderson followed the woman off the Red Line and walked behind her until the 1400 block of West Jarvis Avenue where he attacked and raped her.

Once away from the "L" stop, Anderson allegedly put both his hands over the mouth of the woman who attempted to scream and struggle, said Assistant State's Attorney Robert Kline.

Anderson then showed the woman a gun, pointed it at her and told her he would shoot if she didn't stop screaming, Kline said.

He then told the woman to give him her underwear, Kline said. Anderson also allegedly took her phone and demanded her passcode.

Anderson then sexually assaulted the woman, Kline said.

At that point, a neighbor was walking his dog in the block, and Anderson ran from the scene with the woman's phone and other belongings, Kline said.

The neighbor helped the woman and called police. The woman was taken to St. Francis Hospital where she was given a rape kit and was treated for mild injuries to her jaw and elsewhere, Kline said.

Anderson eventually turned himself in after Chicago police released surveillance footage allegedly showing him follow the woman.

A community member saw a photo of Anderson on the morning news and urged the man to turn himself into police, warning him two things could happen: Anderson could turn himself in, or police could arrest him on the street or at his girlfriend's house, which could lead to injuries, Ald. Joe Moore (49th) said.

Anderson and the community member went to Moore's office, and Moore contacted police and then drove to the police station with Anderson and the community member, though they were in separate cars. Moore said he didn't speak to Anderson much, though he thanked him for "doing the right thing and turning himself in."

Anderson has 19 prior misdemeanors, including three for public indecency and lewd exposure, Kline said.

Judge Adam Donald Bourgeois Jr. held Anderson on no bail, saying the acts made him a threat to the community.

"The method of this attack is of concern to public safety," Bourgeois said.
