CHICAGO — The Shedd Aquarium has decided on a name for its latest baby dolphin: Makoa, or "fearless" in Hawaiian.
Nearly 3,500 Shedd fans helped decide on Makoa's name by voting (the other option was Kolohe, or "rascal"), the aquarium said in a news release. To thank them, Shedd will offer onsite visitors a free pass with purchase of an adult or child Shedd Pass 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday.
Makoa (Ma-ko-ah), a male Pacific white-sided dolphin, was born on June 1. He is one of less than 20 Pacific white-sided dolphins being cared for in the United States, according to the Shedd.
“Makoa will be an ambassador for dolphins everywhere, helping the aquarium raise awareness about the importance of research and conservation well as furthering Shedd’s mission of connecting people to the living world, and inspiring them to make a difference,” said Tim Binder, executive vice president of animal car, according to the Shedd.
Makoa weighs 108 pounds and has achieved important milestones for young dolphins, including bonding with his mom, Piquet, and interacting with trainers and fellow dolphins, according to the Shedd.
"As one of the most adventurous calves to have ever been born at Shedd, he has certainly lived up to his new name," according to the Shedd.
