HYDE PARK — Bronzeville business owners should warm up their grant-writing pens because the city has started a new round of grants of up to $150,000 for businesses that need upgrades.

The city has opened applications for the Small Business Improvement Fund, which will fund up to 75 percent of the total project costs, but the window to get a grant will close on Jan. 8.

The program will expand throughout the city in the coming months, but is starting with businesses in the 47th and King TIF District, which is bounded by State, 40th and 51st streets and portions of King Drive and St. Lawrence Avenue.

The grants can fund repairs or upgrades to windows, floors, roofs, heating and air conditioning systems, accessibility compliance and other improvements, according to the city’s planning department.

The maximum grant amounts are $150,000 for industrial properties and $150,000 for commercial properties.

For more information about applying for a grant, call Somercor 504, the nonprofit administering the program for the city, at 312-360-3300.
