EDGEWATER — A new cellphone retailer is set to open up shop at the busy northeast corner of Thorndale Avenue and North Broadway. Verizon users, can you hear me now?

Joe Padorr, the property's leasing agent for Seneca Realty, said a California-based independent authorized dealer will call the highly-trafficked storefront home, which should open before or around Feb. 1.

The group already has 14 other Verizon locations throughout the state, with several others in mind for the city's North Side and downstate, Padorr said.

The property at 5936 N. Broadway was a prime location for any business due to its high visibility on the busy north end of Broadway and its spot on the way to and from the CTA Thorndale Red Line stop — but for over a year has remained vacant when close deals fell through "for whatever reason," Padorr said.

Now, with a recognizable brand like Verizon, Padorr said he hopes the business will bring new life to the corner while fulfilling a need for residents — making sure they have functional personal devices.

It may not be the "sexiest" business to move into the neighborhood, but it's an additional amenity to the area, he said.

"I know that cell stores and mattress stores are not necessarily the sexiest things to have, especially in a community that has a lot of local, engaged shops and restaurants," Padorr said. "But these guys are great operators; they'll be a nice addition to the community."
