MOUNT GREENWOOD — Five central air conditioning units have been stolen or damaged in Mount Greenwood and Morgan Park, prompting the Chicago Police Department to issue an alert on Monday afternoon.
The thefts all occurred in Beat 2211, which stretches from 99th Street to 117th Street, between Cicero and Western avenues. This area is serviced by police in the Morgan Park District and includes all of Mount Greenwood as well as portions of Morgan Park and West Beverly.
In these robberies, thieves enter a homeowner's backyard, damaging their central air conditioning unit. The thieves take parts or whole cooling units, as these devices contain valuable copper components.
All of the robberies in the Far Southwest Side neighborhoods occurred between Nov. 30-Dec. 5. Here's a list of the blocks that were targeted:
• 11200 block of South Spaulding Avenue in Mount Greenwood
• 11100 block of South Albany Avenue in Mount Greenwood
• 3600 block of West 116th Street in Mount Greenwood
• 11100 block of Washtenaw Avenue in Morgan Park
Police are encouraging residents to report any suspicious vehicles or people in alleys looking into backyards or working on central air units.
