WEST RIDGE — For $1,100 a month, you can rent part of a 68-unit historic West Ridge castle, complete with its own private art deco pool, pond and statues galore.
In an advertisement listed on Craigslist, the two-bedroom condominium promises four Indian Boundary Park-facing living room windows, built-in bookshelves, antique lighting fixtures and "honey-colored" hardwood floors.
In the bathroom, the ad claims renters will be privy to some of the building's original details — including the original 1920s-era tile floor and china handles in the shower.
To complement the building's exterior gargoyle statues, the rental also touts a maintenance man who will "take care of the dragons."
Throughout the property, working fountains, statues and flowers decorate the double-courtyard complex.
The building at 2416-58 W. Greenleaf Ave. was designed by architect Jens J. Jensen and was constructed between 1925-28. It has been featured regularly as part of the Chicago Architecture Foundation's Open House Chicago tour of historic sites.
It sits next to Indian Boundary Park, and was formerly separated by a moat filled with walkways and swans, according to the architecture tour's website.
Though the moat no longer exists, evidence of its retaining walls and bridges still exist — and residents have spotted other wildlife like geese and ducks swimming in the pond today.
