24-Year-Old Man Shot and Killed in Portage Park Identified

CHICAGO — A 24-year-old man was fatally wounded Monday night in a Portage Park shooting, according to police.

Police found the man on the sidewalk in the 5600 block of West Byron Street around 6 p.m., said Officer Jose Estrada, Chicago Police spokesman. The man had suffered a gunshot wound to the back, Estrada said.

He was brought to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center in critical condition, Estrada said.

George Carrero, of the 3500 block of North Linder, was pronounced dead at the scene at 6:53 p.m., according to morgue records.

The man was a documented gang member, police said.
