ROGERS PARK — If you notice Sheridan Road in Rogers Park looks a little brighter than usual, that's because it is.

In anticipation of this year's Polar Palooza event, the Rogers Park Business Alliance and Loyola University teamed up to string thousands of lights along Sheridan Road so it shines for the more than 70,000 commuters who pass through the Rogers Park neighborhood each day.

Crews were out Monday afternoon stringing lights across trees.

Funds for the lights come from the business group's Special Service Area account for the roadway, in addition to a contribution from the university.

The lights are not only meant to attract more into the neighborhood, but also to spread "holiday cheer" during the darkness of winter, said Jennifer Clark, a Loyola representative.

On Dec. 5 and 6, Polar Palooza will take over the CTA Loyola Red Line Station, 6550 N. Sheridan Road, with live reindeer, a skating rink, music, food, ice sculpting, face painting and more.

The free two-day outdoor festival will last from 12-8 p.m. Saturday and 12-6 p.m. Sunday, and a $5 donation will allow access to the synthetic ice rink, face painting and arts and crafts area.
