EDGEWATER — It's the start of flu season, and Edgewater residents will now have two additional health clinics along North Broadway to choose from: Chicago Health Medical Group and Harken Health.

Though not slated to open until January, Harken, which took up shop in the new complex at 5244 North Broadway alongside PetSmart and Chipotle, bills itself as a "new kind of health care company" that offers health insurance in a membership-based model.

People can buy Gold, Silver and Bronze membership plans that include unlimited visits to Harken clinics, wellness classes like nutrition and fitness and prescription drug coverage.

"Our vision is to change what the world expects from health care, and restore it to a time when doctors knew patients by name and built lasting connections within their community," CEO Tom Vanderheyden said.

Earlier this month, Chicago Health opened Oct. 5 next to Sleepy's at 6201 North Broadway as a primary care clinic in partnership with Uptown's Weiss Memorial Hospital.

Family medicine specialist Robin Tong and family nurse practitioner Beata Janton will be the first to provide medical services at the site, and are both currently on staff at Weiss and accepting patients.

“Good medicine equals one part science, one part common sense and a whole lot of care,” Tong said. His specialties include preventative health, LGBT medicine and complementary and alternative medicine.

The office will accept most major HMO, PPO and conventional insurance plans, as well as most government plans, it said in a statement.

Both new offices were welcomed with a ribbon-cutting ceremonies and will join other local health centers like Physicians Immediate Care, several Walgreens wellness clinics and a CVS clinic, all on North Broadway.
