CHICAGO — Olympian Lolo Jones, fresh off hip surgery, caught some flack from the Internet this weekend for a Halloween costume inspired by another athlete known for lower body injuries: Derrick Rose.
The top-flight hurdler and bobsledder donned two crutches, leg casts and even a protective mask to dress up like Rose, the oft-injured Chicago Bulls star who's now nursing a broken bone in his face. Jones, who had surgery on a torn hip labrum last month, took to Instagram with her costume, saying she's "gonna rebound" from her injury like D.Rose:
The costume immediately drew outcry from Bulls fans who thought Jones was picking on Rose, a former NBA MVP who has played in only 65 regular-season games since tearing an anterior cruciate ligament in the 2012 playoffs. Jones, who's actually rehabbing a leg injury, wondered on Twitter how she could be criticized while others, including ESPN's Michael Wilbon, could get a pass for dressing up as the Bulls' snakebit superstar.
Though he says he can only see out of one eye, Rose is playing with the orbital fracture he suffered in training camp last month. The Englewood native shot just 2-for-8 from the field, but dished out eight assists and grabbed seven rebounds in a Bulls win Sunday over the Orlando Magic.
