HUMBOLDT PARK — A puppy that had been rescued from an alleged dogfighting ring was recovered and returned to safety Sunday after being stolen from a foster home, according to an animal rescue group.
Between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. Friday, Yellow, a nine-week-old pitbull, was abducted in a burglary, according to Kelsey Francis, a volunteer board member with New Leash on Life Chicago. "Some personal belongings, like jewelry," were also taken, she said.
On Sunday night a "good Samaritan" identified Yellow after seeing notices about the missing puppy, Francis said, and that person called the police.
A volunteer who had adopted Yellow before being burglarized, announced his recovery on Facebook Monday night.
Yellow is now reunited with other members of his litter at a foster home operated by New Leash on Life, Francis said. He's been "medically cleared" and will be "ready for adoption in the next few weeks," she added.
Francis said the details of the burglary and recovery have not yet been made public, as police are still investigating the incident.
Yellow was one of 17 dogs rescued from a suspected dog fighting ring in September, Francis said. New Leash on Life took in seven of the puppies, and their mom, and relocated them to foster homes.
"We sincerely appreciate all the support from community rescues and good Samaritans who stepped up to help us," Francis said. "Because of all their efforts combined, we were able to recover him."
Chicago Police could not provide further information about the burglary case Wednesday afternoon.
