MCKINLEY PARK — Attention South Side beer geeks: A harvest ale brewed from hops grown in a neighborhood backyard will be on tap tonight at the Madmouse Brewery in University Village.

At 5 p.m. at 724 W. Maxwell St., head brewer Phil Zelewsky will roll out the Backyard Harvest Pale Ale, brewed from 23 pounds of cascade hops plucked from the backyard of his longtime buddy, Brandon Surprenant, in McKinley Park.

The self-proclaimed “beer dork” and homebrewer planted the hops five years ago and gave the year's harvest to Zelewsky for free. A similar batch from a brew store would cost $12 and $14 a pound.

Backyard Harvest will be served for $6 a pint.
