WEST RIDGE — One of the most popular places in the city for Pakistani fare, Sabri Nihari was honored among other culinary hits on this year's Michelin Bib Gourmand list after 19 long years.

"[My father] is the one that's the pioneer of the business, he's the one who brought it up to this level," said Junaid Mohammed, who now runs the family restaurant. "It feels great. We've never received something like this compliment in our service industry, we love it."

A restaurant received a Bib Gourmand if it's judged to be quality food for a good price. The only catch is that restaurants that receive a Bib Gourmand are not eligible for a much-coveted Michelin star.

When asked why he thought it took so long to get recognition for their food, Mohammed laughed and said, "I don't know to answer that question."

Sabri Nihari, which opened at 2502 W. Devon Ave. in 1996, serves up dishes long-considered favorites in the neighborhood (and beyond), like kabobs, chicken tikka, curry and a slew of charcoal-grilled goods. Most dishes are between $10-15, with kids' meals starting at $5.

Mohammed said the restaurant is known for its consistent high-quality meals and service, but that they've also become embedded in the community by participating in catering events and being vendors at community happenings.

As one of the longest family-operated restaurants on Devon, Mohammed said, his family and staff were grateful for the culinary honor.

They hope the recognition will encourage those who haven't tried their authentic Pakistani dishes to give them a whirl, promising the trip will be worth it.

"It's a whole experience when you come out here," Mohammed said.
