Bridgeport Murder Leads to Charges Against Back of the Yards Man: Police

BRIDGEPORT — A 20-year-old Back of the Yards man has been charged in a Jan. 29 fatal shooting in Bridgeport.

Christopher Garza, of the 4500 block of South Wood Street, is charged with first-degree murder and aggravated assault.

Police said Garza shot and killed 20-year-old Israel Pena in an alley near the 1200 block of West 32nd Street around 3:10 a.m. Jan. 29.

Pena, of Rockford, was pronounced dead at the scene at 3:20 a.m., according to The Cook County Medical Examiner.

Garza landed the assault charge after he head-butted a detective during questioning about an unrelated incident, police said.
