NORTH CENTER — Everyone from William Shatner to the Jonas Brothers has covered the Beatles, some more successfully than others.

Bethany Thomas is attempting an even gutsier feat: On Sunday, the Jeff Award-winning singer/actress, currently appearing in "The Tempest" at the Chicago Shakespeare Theater, will perform the Fab Four's "Rubber Soul" album in full and David Bowie's "Young Americans." (Fun fact: "Young Americans" includes Bowie's cover of the Beatles' "Across the Universe.")

Catch Thomas' show, dubbed "Plastic Soul Defined," 7:30-10 p.m. Sunday at High-Hat Club, 1920 W. Irving Park Rd. Admission is $10. Members of her backing band Full Fathom Five are also part of "The Tempest" cast.

Christopher Piatt, producer of the weekly live magazine Paper Machete, which frequently features Thomas, called the attempt "audacious."

"But part of Bethany's style is that she's able to sing in several different genres — pop, rock, soul, jazz," he said. "And she has a huge range and ferocious pipes."
