Kevin Kennelly's Parents Donate Settlement to South Side Schools: Report

By Alex Nitkin | September 25, 2015 9:00am | Updated on September 25, 2015 9:15am

BEVERLY — More than four years after their son was beaten to death, Kevin and Jean Kennelly will give away most of the money they were awarded in a settlement, the Daily Southtown reported Friday.

On July 4, 2011, 17-year-old Kevin Kennelly Jr. suffered a fatal punch to his face during a fight in Long Beach, Ind.

His parents, Jean and Kevin Kennelly, were recently awarded $1 million in a lawsuit against Jake Malecek, the teen who pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter.

The couple said they would donate most of the sum to Mount Carmel High School, where Kevin Jr. attended. The rest, they said, will go to St. Barnabas School, where he went to elementary school; a church and a scholarship fund they created in their son's name.
