CHICAGO — Lincoln Park Zoo's colobus monkeys welcomed a new member to their family last week, zookeepers announced Wednesday. The primate is "doing well" after its Sept. 15 birth, they said.

Visitors to the zoo's Helen Brach Primate House will now see 11-year-old Kutaka, the last colobus monkey to be born at the zoo, clutching her 8-day-old baby, according to a Lincoln Park Zoo press release. Zookeepers haven't yet been able to measure the newborn or check its gender because it's "clinging tight to Kutaka," the release said.

Colobus monkeys, known for their distinctive black-and-white fur, are native to equatorial Africa, where they swing from the canopies of tropical rainforests.

The newborn's all-white fur will start to change after about three months, zookeepers said.
