Five Things to Know About Town Hall District Crime in August

UPTOWN — During August, the Town Hall District reported more than 540 serious crimes, including more than 360 thefts and 22 aggravated assaults and batteries, according to data available through the Chicago Police Department website.

The district is bordered by Fullerton Avenue, Lake Michigan, Lawrence Avenue and the Chicago River. It includes portions of Uptown, Lincoln Square, North Center, Lakeview and Lincoln Park. Its beats include 1911, 1912, 1913, 1914, 1915, 1921, 1922, 1923, 1924, 1925, 1931, 1932, 1933, 1934 and 1935, according to the Chicago Police Department. In July, the district had more than 350 thefts and 20 aggravated assaults and batteries.

Of the 541 serious crimes in August, there were 54 burglaries, five sexual assaults, 53 stolen cars and 45 robberies.

Here are five things to know about August's crime numbers in the district:

1. Thefts: Of the 362 thefts, about 90 times people reported more than $500 was stolen. About 158 times people reported less than $500 was stolen. About 45 incidents were reported at retail stores. Sixteen times, people reported being pick-pocketed and twice people reported having their purse snatched, police said. In July, at least 90 people reported more than $500 was stolen from them and about 150 times people reported it being less than $500.

2. Aggravated Attacks: Six aggravated assaults and 16 aggravated batteries were reported in August. A gun was used in five attacks, a knife was used in nine and an unspecified weapon was used in five attacks. Three of the incidents involved a senior citizen and three were domestic related. An arrest has been made in five of the incidents. In July, there were 11 aggravated assaults and nine aggravated batteries.

3. Timing: More than 125 of the serious crimes occurred between 6 a.m. and 2 p.m. More than 235 serious incidents occurred between 2 p.m. and 10 p.m. And about 180 occurred between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m., according to the data. In July, more than 120 serious incidents occurred between 6 a.m. and 2 p.m. About 225 incidents occurred between 2 and 10 p.m. And another 170 occurred between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m.

4. When and where the five sexual assaults occurred:

• Around 5 a.m. on Aug. 6, in the 2600 block of West Lawrence Avenue

• Around 7 p.m. on Aug. 9, in the 700 block of West Belmont Avenue

• Around 12:30 a.m. on Aug. 11, in the 200 block of West Montrose Harbor Drive

• Around 3 a.m. on Aug. 29, in the 1200 block of West Irving Park Road

• Around 4:30 a.m. on Aug. 30, in the 1100 block of West Patterson Avenue
