Five Things to Know About Foster District Crime

CHICAGO — In August, the Foster Police District reported 169 serious crimes including 12 aggravated attacks and 109 thefts, according to data available through the Chicago Police Department website.

The Foster District is bordered by Peterson Avenue, Lawrence Avenue, Lake Michigan and as far west as Virginia Avenue. It includes portions of Lincoln Square, Uptown, West Ridge and Edgewater. It includes beats 2011, 2012, 2013, 2031, 2032, 2033, 2022, 2023 and 2024, according to the Chicago Police Department.

Statistics from July show very similar numbers.

The nearly 170 serious crimes included 22 burglaries, four sexual assaults, 12 stolen cars and 10 robberies.

Here are five things to know:

1. Thefts: Of the 109 thefts, 21 times people reported losing more than $500. About 53 times were reported less than $500 was stolen. Twenty-one of the incidents occurred at retail stores. Four people reported being pick-pocketed, police said. Ten people reported more than $500 was stolen from them in July.

2. Aggravated Attacks: Five aggravated assaults and seven aggravated batteries were reported in August. In two incidents the attacker had a gun, and, in two others, a knife was used. In the other eight incidents, another weapon was used. An arrest was made in three of the incidents, police said. In July, eight aggravated assaults and four aggravated batteries.

3. Timing: Between 6 a.m. and 2 p.m., 59 serious crimes occurred. Sixty-three incidents occurred between 2 and 10 p.m. And another 47 incidents occurred between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m., according to the data.

In July, more than 40 serious crimes occurred between 6 a.m. and 2 p.m. About 80 incidents occurred between 2 and 10 p.m. And another 30 occurred between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. Twice as much crime occurred between 2 and 10 p.m. than the other 16 hours combined.

4. When and where the four sexual assaults occurred:

• Around 11:30 p.m. on Aug 1, in the 5700 block of North Winthrop Avenue

• Around 4:30 a.m. on Aug. 2, in the 5600 block of North Winthrop Avenue

• Around 9 p.m. on Aug 2, in the 5400 block of North Broadway

• Around 5:38 p.m. on Aug. 6, in the 1400 block of West Gregory Street

5. Numbers by beat:

• Beat 2011, bordered by Foster on the south, Western Avenue on the east, Virginia Avenue on west and Peterson Avenue on the north: 26 serious crimes (In July: 25 serious crimes.)

• Beat 2012, bordered by Western Avenue on the west, Clark Street on the east, Foster Avenue on the south and Peterson Avenue on the north: 15 serious crimes (In July: 17 serious crimes.)

• Beat 2013, bordered by Clark Street on the west, Broadway on the east, Foster Avenue on the south and Peterson Avenue on the north: 21 serious crimes. (In July: nine serious crimes.)

• Beat 2022, bordered by Broadway on the west, Lake Michigan on the East, Bryn Mawr Avenue on the south and Thorndale Avenue on the north: 11 serious crimes. (In July: 13 serious crimes.)

• Beat 2023, bordered by Broadway on the west, Lake Michigan on the east, Bryn Mawr Avenue on the north and Foster Avenue on the south: 37 (In July: 33.)

• Beat 2024, bordered by Winthrop Avenue on the west, Lake Michigan on the east, Foster Avenue on the north and Lawrence Avenue on the south: 19 (In July: 15.)

• Beat 2031, bordered by roughly Virginia Avenue on the west, Leavitt Street on the east, Foster Avenue on the north and Lawrence Avenue on the south: 12 (In July: 10.)

This data only includes reports of homicide, criminal sexual assault, robbery, aggravated battery, aggravated assault, burglary, larceny, motor vehicle theft and arson.
