CHICAGO — After recent humid nastiness, many of us are welcoming the cooler temps. Here are a few things to do outside. No it's not too cold!
1. Walk Through A Sea Of Fall And Summer Flowers: If you're a fan of beautiful things, then Gethsemane Garden Center in Edgewater is for you — it's like an indoor/outdoor garden party and everybody is invited. The block-long shop along North Clark is known as the epicenter of all things flower and plant-related, and with a sprawling outdoor space to peruse flora and decorative pieces, it's easy to get lost and hard to choose. Right now, Gethsemane is transitioning between summer and fall offerings, so it's the perfect time to channel either by stopping by and finding the right floral friend for you. Can't make it out today? On Saturday they'll be having their annual sidewalk sale. Gethsemane Garden Center, 5739 N. Clark St., Open until 6 p.m., Prices vary.
2. Learn About Space: Grab a light jacket and head to Jefferson Memorial Park and get a good look at the heavens. The event hosted by the Chicago Astronomer is designed for the whole family. Attendees will learn about phases of the moon, neighboring planets, star clusters and nebulae. This event is the last to take place on the Far Northwest Side as part of the Chicago Park District's Night Out in the Parks series. Jefferson Memorial Park, 4822 N. Long Ave. 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Free.
3. Watch "Selma" in the Park: Need some back to school inspiration? "Selma," the story of Martin Luther King, Jr.'s march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama, screens for free in the park tonight. Bring a blanket (and maybe a light jacket). Clark (John) Park, 4615 W. Jackson Blvd. Starts at dusk. Free.
4. Hit Up The Farmers Market: Farmers market season is almost over and you will MISS those fresh, local tomatoes when December hits. Buy 'em up while you still can. Andersonville Farmers Market, 1500 W. Berwyn Ave. from 3 to 8 p.m. More city markets here.
5. Take A Hike: It's finally cool enough to avoid heat stroke while running, so hit up a trail in your neighborhood or stroll through a park. Explore some options here.
