Woodlawn Honoring its Most Famous Residents with a New Festival

HYDE PARK — Woodlawn will celebrate three of its most famous residents at a new festival on Saturday.

The SOL Street Festival will remember Oscar Brown Jr., Lorraine Hansberry and Sam Greenlee with music, poetry and drama from noon-7 p.m. at Voice Park at 62nd Street and Cottage Grove Avenue.

The event starts with a community march from 63rd and Ingleside at 10 a.m. to the park.

Mario Smith, host of WHPK’s “News from the Service Entrance,” will emcee the festival.

Singer Maggie Brown, daughter of Oscar Brown Jr., will headline the music.

The festival also includes artwork by Hank Willis Thomas, poetry from Avery R. Young, drama from MPAACT Theater and music from Magic Carpet and JD’s Revenge.

The festival is free and open to the public.
