Ten People Killed, 45 Wounded in Labor Day Weekend Violence, Police Say

CHICAGO — Ten people were killed and 45 wounded in violence over the holiday weekend, police say.

Most of the victims of the weekend's violence were killed or injured in shootings, though one man was stabbed to death on Monday, police say. The violence occurred across the city.

In the most recent fatal shooting, a man was fighting another man early Tuesday in Irving Park when he was shot, said Officer Jose Estrada, Chicago police spokesman. The victim was later pronounced dead, Estrada said.

At 7:47 p.m. Monday, a man was standing on the sidewalk in Garfield Park when someone walked up to him and shot him, Estrada said. The victim was later pronounced dead, Estrada said.

In non-fatal shootings:

• At 2:54 a.m. Tuesday, four people were shot when they were sitting on a back porch in Englewood and someone walked into the backyard and shot at them, Estrada said. The victims were taken in critical and serious conditions to Stroger Hospital and St. Bernard Hospital, Estrada said.

• At 12:05 a.m., an 18-year-old man was walking on the sidewalk in the 5300 block of West North Street in Austin when three men shot at him, Estrada said. The victim was taken to Loyola University Medical Center in stable condition with a wound to his left ankle, Estrada said.

• At 11:40 p.m. Monday, two men were walking on the sidewalk at the corner of 47th and Ada streets in Back of the Yards when they were approached by two men who shot at them, Estrada said.

A 39-year-old man was shot in his right shoulder, right leg and back and was taken to Stroger Hospital in stable condition, Estrada said, and a 41-year-old man was shot in his right leg and ear and was taken to Mt. Sinai Hospital in stable condition.

The shooting is possibly gang-related, police said.

• Also at 11:40 p.m., a 22-year-old man was injured in a drive-by shooting in Morgan Park.

• At 10:30 p.m., a 31-year-old man was walking on the sidewalk in the 2200 block of South Spaulding Avenue in Little Village when he heard shots and felt pain, Estrada said. The man was shot in his lower right leg and took himself to Mt. Sinai Hospital, where he was in stable condition, Estrada said.

The shooting is possibly gang-related, police said.

• At 8 p.m., a 25-year-old man was standing in the 600 block of East 133rd Street in Riverdale when he was shot in his leg, Estrada said. The victim was taken to Roseland Community Hospital in good condition, Estrada said.

• At 3:07 p.m., a 17-year-old man was in the 11300 block of South Throop Street in Morgan Park when he was shot in his leg, Estrada said. The victim was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in stable condition, Estrada said.

• At 2:45 p.m., a 34-year-old man was in the 2500 block of West 71st Street in Marquette Park when he was shot in his chest, Estrada said. The victim was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in serious condition.

• At 11:45 a.m., a 45-year-old woman was in the 2000 block of East 71st Street in South Shore when she was shot in her right hip, Estrada said. The victim was taken to Stroger Hospital in stable condition, Estrada said.

• At 11:34 a.m., a man was fighting with another man in the 800 block of East 81st Street in Chatham when he was stabbed, Estrada said. The victim was later pronounced dead.

• At 10:30 a.m., a 27-year-old man was in the 7900 block of South Carpenter Street in Auburn Gresham he was shot in his chest, Estrada said. The victim was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in critical condition, Estrada said.

• At 9 a.m., a 25-year-old man walked into Advocate Christ Medical Center with gunshot wounds to both of his feet, Estrada said. The man said he had been outside in the 5600 block of South Wells Street in Englewood when he heard shots and felt pain, Estrada said. The man is in good condition.

In all, two people were killed and 15 injured in Labor Day shootings, for which no one is in custody.

There was one person killed and six injured in shootings on Sunday, two people killed and eight injured in shootings on Saturday and three people killed and 17 injured in shootings on Friday.

During the holiday weekend last year, three people were killed and 29 were wounded.
