NEAR NORTH SIDE — Jenner Elementary Academy of the Arts is kicking off the new school year with an effort that tries to get fathers to play a more active role in the lives of their children.

The arts-based school, 1119 N. Cleveland Ave., is participating in the "Million Father March" campaign, a national effort that bills itself as an "opportunity for black men to show their commitment to the educational lives of their children on the first day of school and throughout the school year."

The national effort began in 2004.

At Jenner, fathers, as well as father-figures like grandfathers, uncles, coaches and neighbors, should bring their children to school at 7:45 a.m. Tuesday, which is the first day of school. Doors open at 8:15 a.m.

Those interested in participating should RSVP online.
