CANARYVILLE — You’ll soon have a chance to help keep the Union Avenue United Methodist Church afloat.

Popular for its storied weekly food pantry program, the 140-year-old institution has been struggling to pay the bills.

Set for 2-8 p.m. Sept. 12 at 4350 S. Union Ave., the second annual Help Ray Save the M.E. party aims to help quell some of those financial woes. Admission is $20 and includes tap beer, food and more. Raffle tickets will be on sale.

The "M.E." is a nickname given to the church during its Methodist-Episcopalian days. And Ray Carey is the church’s longtime caretaker and the man who delivers boxes of food to shut-ins, the elderly and the sick.

Every Wednesday, volunteers pass out thousands of pounds of food from the Greater Chicago Food Depository to more than 100 families.

The party is sponsored by The Busted Knuckle Riders motorcycle group.
