WICKER PARK — Police are searching for the driver of a minivan who fled Tuesday night after hitting and injuring a woman trying to walk across Division Street.

The woman, 32, was taken to Stroger Hospital and was suffering from "non life threatening injuries," though she reported pain to her legs and arms and had a cut on her head, according to Officer Janel Sedevic, a Chicago Police spokeswoman.

The hit-and-run took place at 8:18 p.m. Tuesday in the 1700 block of Division Street in Wicker Park just east of Hermitage Avenue, as a minivan traveling westbound struck a woman who was crossing the street.

Alisa Hauser witnessed the accident and describes the scene:

Bleeding from her head, the woman shouted at the driver of the van as he or she sped off. The van made a quick left turn onto Hermitage Avenue, witnesses said.

After yelling at the driver, the woman appeared to faint and fell to the ground, according to witnesses who called 911.

A driver of a car traveling behind the van attempted to chase the minivan but had no success stopping the suspect. Describing the minivan driver, the car driver told police: "He jumped a curb and kept going."

"It's horrible that someone could do this and just leave," said another motorist at the scene.

Sedevic said the van was described as "a possible Mercury Villager, a 90s model." The driver's side mirror of the van was broken and the van's color was not known. The back of the van was brown or maroon with a strip of lighter beige wood paneling.

As of early Wednesday, no one was in custody.  Police asked that anyone who sees a van matching the description should call the department's hit-and-run hotline at 312-745-4521.
