UPTOWN — About 40 architects, city planners and community members worked together to liven up the Sunnyside Mall with a temporary art installation last week.

The "Pure Imagination" installation draped the mall in the 1200 block of West Sunnyside Avenue in an orange hue with balloons suspended from tree canopies, giant dots, hammocks for neighbors to enjoy and lyrics to Willy Wonka's "Pure Imagination," according to Brett Weidl, a landscape architect in charge of the project.

The project was intended to show neighbors "the beauty that exists around them and the potential of this somewhat forgotten corridor with enormous potential. We wanted to temporarily and boldly enliven the space, draw positive attention and kick off a larger discussion about the future of this beautiful corridor," Weidl said.

Residents were able to relay their thoughts in a community input meeting Saturday, but those who were unable to attend can still have their opinions heard on the Sunnyside Mall Facebook page.
