5 Killed, 32 Wounded in Weekend Gun Violence, Police Say

CHICAGO — Five people were killed and 32 were hurt in shootings over the weekend, police said.

A 19-year-old man died and a 16-year-old boy was in critical condition after a shooting in North Lawndale Sunday night, according to Officer Antoinette Ursetti, a Chicago Police spokeswoman.

A 21-year-old man died after being shot in his head in Englewood Sunday afternoon, Ursetti said.

A 24-year-old construction worker was shot in his buttocks during a robbery in Humboldt Park late Sunday, Ursetti said.

• Most recently, about 1:20 a.m. Monday, a 24-year-old man was shot in Back of the Yards, Ursetti said.

The man was walking in the 5400 block of South Justine Street when he heard gunshots and felt pain, Ursetti said.

The man was taken to Stroger Hospital in serious condition, where he was treated for gunshot wounds in his hip and his leg, Ursetti said.

Police said the man is documented gang member.

• About 15 minutes earlier, a 16-year-old boy was walking in the 6500 block of South King Drive in Greater Grand Crossing when someone walked up and shot him in his chest, Ursetti said.

The boy brought himself to University of Chicago Medical Center, Ursetti said, where he was listed in critical condition.

• Around 11:30 p.m., an 18-year-old man was shot in his shoulder in the 8900 block of South Commercial Avenue in South Chicago, Ursetti said.

The man was brought to Christ Medical Center in serious condition, Ursetti said.

Police could not immediately provide any other information about the shooting.

• About 7:30 p.m., two 22-year-old men were shot in the 3700 block of South Michigan Avenue in Douglas, Ursetti said.

One of the men was taken to Stroger Hospital with a gunshot wound in his shoulder, Ursetti said, and the other man was taken to Mercy Hospital with a gunshot wound in his foot.

Police could not immediately provide the conditions of either man, or any other information about the shooting.

• At 6:43 p.m. Sunday, an 18-year-old man was standing in the 6700 block of South Western Avenue in Chicago Lawn when someone came out of an alley and shot at him before fleeing westbound, Ursetti said.

The man was taken to Holy Cross Hospital, Ursetti said, where he was in good condition after being treated for a gunshot wound in his right hand.

Police said he is a documented gang member.

Before that, 12 people were wounded in shootings from Saturday morning into Sunday, police said.

Three people were killed and another 12 were wounded in shootings between Friday morning and Saturday morning, police said.
