HYDE PARK — It’s all about touching at the new “Warm Kitty, Soft Kitty” exhibit opening at the Hyde Park Art Center.
At the exhibit opening Sept. 6 in the Kanter-McCormick Gallery at the art center, 5020 S. Cornell Ave., 19 artists explore the emotions and physical sensation of being touched.
“Physical touch can elicit a huge range of emotions, from awkward, terrifying or painful, to nurturing, invigorating or exciting,” said Camille Morgan, the exhibit curator.
She said the exhibit is an invitation for viewers to reintroduce themselves to feeling both tactilely and emotionally.
“It is a reassurance of our existence,” Morgan said. “By acknowledging our need to connect physically, the exhibit encourages the viewer to step back and flex their individual sense of memory beyond their personal experience.”
A reception will be from 3-5 p.m. Sept. 13, and the exhibit runs through Dec. 13.
“Warm Kitty, Soft Kitty” includes work from artists Denenge Akpem, Eliza Bennett, Laci Coppins and Nakia Gordon, Alexandria Eregbu, Isaac Facio and Benedickt Diemer, Whitney Huber, Taylor Hokanson and Dieter Kirkwood, Cole Don Kelley and Barbara Layne. Director Hiro Murai, Tameka J. Norris, Betsy Odom, Scout Paré-Phillips, Jennifer Ray, Aileen Son and Fo Wilson will also have work in the exhibit.
