RIVER NORTH — Downtown streets will be closed and 'L' trains rerouted this weekend as the Chicago Transit Authority continues upgrading the Brown and Purple lines.

The CTA will resume work Friday night on its Ravenswood Connector project, which aims to eliminate slow zones and create smoother rides for Brown and Purple line commuters.

The Armitage, Sedgwick, Chicago and Merchandise Mart Brown Line stations will be closed from 8 p.m. Friday to 4 a.m. Monday, with commuters advised to take the Red Line between Fullerton and Downtown. Free shuttle buses will transport riders to the closed stops between the Fullerton and Clark/Lake stations.

Motorists should note that the following street closures will occur 6 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday:

•300 to 332 W. Institute Place.

•500 to 800 N Franklin St.

•200 to 325 W. Superior St.

•200 to 325 W. Huron St.

•200 to 325 W. Erie St.

•200 to 325 W. Grand Ave. (one eastbound lane will remain open).

Lanes will be also closed during the day — and streets completely closed at night — from 5 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday from 200 to 325 W. Ontario and 200 to 325 W. Ohio streets.

Sidewalks will remain open on Franklin, Erie, and Grand, but closed on the other impacted streets while work is occurring. Franklin alleys from Chicago to Grand avenues will be closed during construction.

The $90-million project is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
