Mather's More than a Cafe

PORTAGE PARK — A number of classes and activities for seniors are scheduled for August at Mather's More Than a Cafe.

In addition to breakfast, lunch and carryout meals, Mather's offers adults older than 50 educational classes, fitness classes, health screenings, consumer seminars, workshops, and special events and day trips. The cafe is at 3235 N. Central Ave.

Events scheduled for August include:

• The Marx Brothers Go Solo on TV: Michael Delaney, a media historian, will show sketches of Groucho, Chico and Harpo performing solo or in pairs on television shows of the 1950s and 1960s, sometimes with the biggest stars of the era. A $3 donation is requested for the event scheduled to take place at 1 p.m. Aug. 13. Registration is required.

• Friday Night Concert: The Way Cool Band will take listeners on a trip back to the 1950s and 1960s at 7 p.m. Aug. 28. Dinner will be available from the Culinary Delighters until 6:30 p.m. An $8 donation is requested. Registration is required.

• The Paleo Diet: Authors Marla & Jeff Sarris will discuss the latest diet craze at 2:15 p.m. Aug. 31. The diet is based on what experts think may have been the diet of early humans, consisting of meat, fish, vegetables and fruit, but no dairy, grains or processed food. An $5 donation is requested. Registration is required.
