BACK OF THE YARDS — There's a new food program in the neighborhood that gives free summer meals to hungry children at the library.

In a partnership with the The Greater Chicago Food Depository, the Chicago Public Library's Back of the Yards branch — at 2111 W. 47th St. — serves 30 children every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 12:30-1:30 p.m.

The meals are shelf-stable, since most libraries don’t have the ability to refrigerate perishable food. The meals include milk and snacks, such as crackers, raisins and applesauce.

The Back of the Yards branch is one of five libraries scattered around the city's South Side participating in the summer meals Programs

In Cook County, 1 in 5 children face hunger during the summer and only 14 percent of eligible children have access to free summer meal sites, according to The Greater Chicago Food Depository.
