CHICAGO — A 22-year-old man was fatally shot Thursday in New City, police said.

Around 8:45 p.m., the man was walking in the 5200 block of South Emerald Avenue when a man walked out of an alley and opened fire, said Officer Jose Estrada, a Chicago Police spokesman.

The man was shot in his upper body and taken to Stroger Hospital in critical condition, but was later pronounced dead, Estrada said.

Jovan Dovantaehopkins, 22, of East Chicago, Ind., was pronounced dead at 9:33 p.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.

No one is in custody for the shooting.
