ENGLEWOOD — Englewood children between 8 and 12 can learn how to construct their own telescope on July 16.

The free interactive workshop is being held at the West Englewood Library, 1745 W. 63rd St. from 11 a.m. - noon. It's hosted by Project SYNCERE (Supporting Youth's Needs with Core Engineering Research Experiments), a nonprofit whose mission is to increase the number of women, minorities and underserved students who enter science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields.

Dymonique Jackson, the branch's event organizer, said the nonprofit is sharing the workshop throughout the city.

Participants will learn how STEM works together so that people can explore the stars.

"This lets science become a little more fun, instead of just throwing it at them," Jackson said.

Space is limited so parents are encouraged to sign up their child as soon as possible. They can call the library at 312-747-3481.
